Getting closer, time for a dose of reality

11.26.2011

We had the home inspection and we are still moving closer to getting the house.  After having the home inspected and finding a few minor issues, we submitted an addendum asking the sellers for a credit to fix the issues that the inspector found.  Now we are waiting... seems like when you're in the home buying process, there is a lot of that; hurry up then wait.  But, now that it is getting so real, and we are most likely going to close on this house, I am starting to worry.  What am I going to fill this house with?

Our new house needs three sets of couches (family room, formal living room, and basement)... we have one set. It has 4 bedrooms.  We are going to use the fourth room as an office... but we don't have a desk.  We have 1,000sq/ft downstairs in the basement to fill with a pool-table, bar, fooz-ball, poker table, etc... but we have none.  We have a huge garage to fill with tools to help with home improvement projects... but we have none (only car tools- not house tools ie saws etc).

I have been scouring pinterest for do-able projects and home design ideas.  There are hundreds of beautiful interiors that I could 'pin' pretending like I am going to use them for inspiration.

Let's get real.  All of those beautiful sparkling white interiors are unrealistic.  I have a messy baby and a 85 pound hyperactive dog.  White isn't going to work.

Putting 20% down on this home has pretty much wiped our savings account out.  It is definitely down to a point where I don't feel comfortable taking the money out to furnish the home the way that we would want to.  So, as much as I would like to pretend like we are going to have so much fun decorating and furnishing this home, the reality is that it is going to have empty areas and some bare walls for a while.  I am looking on craigslist more than furniture stores.  And those amazing rooms on pinterest are not going to show up in our home...  At least not until I find a job!

  1. Sometimes it's hard for me to look at all the pretty pictures on pinterest... so many wonderful things I just don't have the budget for at this point in life. I'm sure your home will come along wonderfully. Most important thing to fill a home with is love anyway!
And I have a feeling that you have an abundance of it!

  2. That is a big house! It will be nice to have something that you can easily grow in to. I will be curious to see the pictures of what you end up doing to the place. And I am not a fan of all white either. When you have kids/pets/like doing things it is hard to clean up!

  3. freecycle

it may not be perfect, but you can ask for what you need and when you are able to afford the upgrade, then you can pass it to someone else in need...

  4. Thats a beautiful home! Its going to look great! When we bought our house we put about 20% down also. It has been very difficult but every year we build on our rooms, a light fixture here and a pillow there. Pinterest does make me feel bad about the things I don't have but I'm so lucky to share it with the man I love no matter what it looks like and you will too! Lots of luck!!!

  5. Don't worry about filling the house right away. Soon you'll have so much junk you won't know what to do with it all, so be glad you're not going to have a cluttered mess! And my cousin has gotten a lot of things off of Craigslist or at auctions/estate sales and redone them and they're REALLY cute. Tables, shelves, desks, etc. I'm sure you'll be able to find quite a few cheap things that you could easily redo to your liking. Good luck and have fun! Looks like a great house!

  7. I moved into my house a year ago, and we're still pretty bare. Stuff will come when it comes. I'm not so much worried about decorating as some other people would be. I prefer to have things uncluttered.

That's a beautiful house though. So happy for you guys!

  9. Beautiful home!. You think you don't have enough stuff to fill it, but you will. Look at Goodwill or garage sales for a great deal and even if you don't like it - think about re-painting it or re-finishing it. Sometimes you can find the best things at garage sales :)

  20. That home is beautiful! I'm glad you got an inspection. We didn't get one on our current home and really regretting it--we found so many things wrong!

And I would love a big decorating budget for our home. We've been here six years and still have a ways to go. :)

Good luck with your closing--so nice to meet you!

  23. It's a great house and decorating takes time and money, but it will all come together. I've been in my house over 2 years and it's still not where I want it to be. I just painted and bought new living room furniture this past summer.

  26. I bet it's overwhelming but you'll be able to afford to furnish how you want to in due time. Try to enjoy the process as much as you guys can in the meantime! Good luck with closing, I hope they give you that credit!
